Ever wonder what you might get Justin Bieber for his 17th birthday? Well, the pop star has the answer. In honor of his big day, he's working with the nonprofit Charity: Water, requesting that his fans donate money to the cause that brings clean water to developing nations.

"I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I'm turning 17 years old on Tuesday [March 1] and have so much to be grateful for!" Bieber wrote on the charity's website. "So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I'm asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change," he continued. "One hundred percent of all donations go directly to building clean water projects in developing countries with Charity: Water, and we'll be able to see photos and GPS of the projects we helped build!"

The teen star then gave his fans some facts about why they should get involved. "Together, we've made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne disease?" he shared. "By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! I want to make my birthday matter this year — let's make it so more kids can grow up to have a 17th birthday like me. Join me to make a change.

"I'm really so grateful for my family, friends and fans — and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need," he added. "Even if you don't have $17 to give, I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way. Thanks and God Bless! #makeachange."

As it turns out, his call has already been answered by his fans. Charity: Water tweeted, " Thanks to all you Beliebers, we hit $7 million raised on mycharity: water today! #makeachange."

Simple Ordering for Custom T-shirts

OoShirts was born out of a simple desire for a better, cheaper product. When founder Raymond Lei was in high school he decided it would be a cool idea, as tennis club president, to get shirts made for his team. The design for the shirts was simple: three colors with a tennis ball-fireball logo.

"When I tried to look around for prices, I looked on and offline, all the prices were pretty high," he says. "It forced us to settle with a lower-quality black-and-white shirt."

But Lei's interest was piqued. After doing research he found that many printing companies were charging markups of more than 50 percent. "It shouldn't be this way," Lei says he thought. And he thought he could do better.

He believed he could offer quality custom T-shirts for a fair price. Lei contacted a supplier in China that quoted him a better price than he could find in the United States. When he began selling custom shirts to other clubs at his high school, the reaction was outstanding. "They all really appreciated the prices and the quality was pretty good," he says.

As more T-shirt orders from clubs at his high school filed in, Lei created a basic website that could help him better organize his company. As his company grew, he added more options to the site, including allowed customers to upload images onto a shirt and get an instant quote for cost.

Soon a U.S. supplier noticed his website and reached out to Lei. Its offer matched what Lei's supplier in China quoted but there was a significant difference: "The shirts would [get] to the customer in less than two weeks, rather than three weeks or more," he says.

Since then, ooShirts has been increasing its customer base by 1,000 per month, uses 20 suppliers, and has grown to three full-time employees, with the help of few interns) and has a website with a full-featured design lab. Lei, a sophomore business major at the University of California-Berkeley, says his revenue is continuing to grow. "We grew from having about $30,000 in revenue per year all the way up about $2.2 million at the end of 2010," he says.

Lei's future goals for his company are continued overall growth in suppliers, customers, employees and revenue. He's confident that soon ooShirts will surpass that of his competitors.

2011 Home + Housewares Preview: Student Design Competition

Illumine_Picture[1].jpg

In its 18th year, the Student Design Competition sponsored by the International Home and Housewares Show announced this year's winning product designs from students representing institutions from around the country. The design competition's annual challenge to students is to redesign a current housewares product to meet the needs of the future or to create a concept for a new product. Winning projects are selected for their innovation, understanding of production and marketing principles and quality of entry materials.

Wesley York, a senior studying Industrial Design at Southern Illinois University from Decatur, IL, won for his design of "Illumine" -- The Pathway to Safety, an emergency light built into an electrical outlet cover. Currently, commercial buildings mount emergency lighting at ceiling level, but during a fire, smoke rises and blocks the light. "Illumine" not only lights up the floor level, but has built-in red and green LEDs that show the correct way out of a building.

"Last semester, our industrial design professor tasked us with designing some sort of lighting, and I immediately thought about emergency lighting," York said. "My father, who has been a fireman at a chemical plant for 17 years, quickly confirmed that this is an issue in commercial buildings."

Second place was awarded to Chet Larrow, a junior at the University of Cincinnati, for the "Barnacle" Air Purifier, a household air purification system, and Katlyn Ross, a senior at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, for "Quick-Fix," a first-aid system that makes treating an injury fast and easy.

Using a battery-powered motor, the "Barnacle" takes in dirty air, removes pollutants and circulates clean air back into the home environment. The attractive unit can be magnetically mounted on appliances in the kitchen or placed on a table in another area of the home. The "Quick-Fix" system organizes a first aid kit's contents into smaller boxes that are labeled by type of injury or emergency, such as cuts, burns, stings, breaks/strains, choking and poisoning, and include simple instructions. The kits help users quickly choose the correct supplies and make first aid procedures more intuitive.
