Adele Postpones Concert Dates Due to Illness

Bad news for the good folks out west: Due to laryngitis, Adele has been forced to cancel five dates on her current North American tour.

A statement on the singer's website reads:

Adele - Rolling in the Deep (Live)

She was diagnosed last Thursday in Minneapolis, MN, where doctors ordered immediate rest and postponement of that night's engagement at First Avenue. Adele performed on Saturday evening in Denver, CO (Ogden Theater) which proved too early a return to the stage. Adele’s show last Sunday evening in Salt Lake City, UT was postponed last minute when her illness worsened. Adele has also been forced to postpone shows in Vancouver, BC (Orpheum Theatre) on May 31, Seattle, WA on June 1 and Portland, OR on June 3.

The tour will resume on June 4 in San Francisco, CA.

Keep an eye out for news of rescheduled shows. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

How to Take On a Bully

Dealing with a large competitor that intimidates your customers

Dear Norm,Trade shows are notorious for the ridiculously high prices exhibitors are forced to pay for basic services. My business partner and I saw an opportunity to provide Internet access at trade shows for a fraction of what the in-house providers charge. Although they assert an exclusive right to provide the service, such claims are in blatant violation of FCC rules intended to foster competition and protect consumers. The major player in the industry is attempting to intimidate us, our customers, and our partners. We have filed a complaint with the FCC and are preparing a white paper to inform exhibitors of their right to buy Internet service from anyone they please. What is the best way to deal with this bully?

Seth Burstein
Co-founder, Trade Show Internet
San Francisco, CA

Anyone who has ever exhibited at a major trade show knows exactly what Seth Burstein is referring to. The rules are ridiculous and the fees outrageous, but if you don't go along with them, you'll face warnings and threats, and your exhibit could even be shut down. So, can you force the powers that be to change their ways without becoming a martyr?

In Seth's case, unfortunately, I think the answer is no. It would cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight the issue in court. Even if he won, he'd succeed only in opening up the market for a slew of competitors. I also thought he was wasting his time doing a white paper. Exhibitors are being forced to overpay for services by thousands of dollars. As much as they may resent the high price of authorized Internet access, it's chicken feed compared with all the other costs. They aren't going to risk being thrown out of the trade show by insisting on buying access from Seth's company.

That said, Seth and his partner aren't about to quit, nor should they. But there are other ways to fight the battle. For example, exhibitors generally can't be required to rent the service from the authorized vendor if they own an Internet access kit that allows them to connect to a remote wireless service provider. Up to now, Seth's company has been renting kits to customers. Maybe he could figure out a way to transfer ownership to them for the duration of the show. Or maybe the company could focus its marketing efforts on smaller trade shows at hotels, where it is likely to encounter less resistance than it does at the giant shows. The point is that Seth and his partner need to stay focused on their real goal, which is to build a viable business, not to change the way trade shows are managed. They can do that later—after they've made their fortunes—if they still want to.

Nokia's online stores go offline in France and Spain

Nokia's "around breakeven" outlook announced earlier today is discouraging at best, and now it looks like the company has begun shuttering online stores in response to growing competition from resellers, which offer lower prices on the same hardware. So far, online stores in France and Spain have been replaced with a closure notice, so customers in those countries will need to turn to third-party vendors to get their smartphone fix. European online stores in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and the UK remain open for business, but low online sales figures (and the inevitable death of Symbian) mean we may see more countries falling offline in the near future. "Prices are too subsidized by the carriers and sales were low, so they will keep providing support," a representative from Nokia Spain told us today, so as expected, the shutdown only affects sales operations -- of course, you'll still be able to turn to your local Nokia site for support.

[Thanks, Reppu]

Outsource Production of Gingko Studio's Greenwall to Yourself

0gingkost.jpg

It would be neat if future forecasters' predictions come true and one day we all have RP machines on our desks, like regular printers, and product designers could then sell us designs. Not products, but actual designs we'd download to the RP machine, which would spit out the product in question.

A similar idea has existed for decades with woodworkers who sold plans via snail-mail. This set-up relied on the recipient to use their know-how, tool collection and trips to the lumber yard via pickup truck to knock up a trestle table, spice rack or platform bed.

As of today we've got design teams like Rotterdam-based Gingko Studio, who've addressed the popularity of their GreenWall Vertical Garden--a sort of mini-garden in a picture frame--not by selling the product, but by putting the plans up on Etsy. Now we urbanites aspiring to have green thumbs but lacking backyards can buy PDF plans, snag a ten-inch Ikea picture frame and essentially outsource the production of Gingko Studio's design to ourselves.

America's Middle Class Is Disappearing

Family

The US economy today borders on schizophrenic. To be sure, we are seeing signs of positive momentum. The last three months have delivered almost 250,000 new jobs per month on average. Great news, but at the same time, unemployment is growing and now exceeds nine percent. Both consumer confidence and small business confidence is higher than where they were last year. But confidence has been falling rapidly for the past few months.

Were Charles Dickens to show up as a commentator on the evening news, he would have a ready vocabulary to describe our current economic situation: This recovery is very much A Tale of Two Cities. After years of record low interest rates, multiple stimulus packages, and the expansion of tax cuts and credits, we are in the midst of a very real recovery, but it is a recovery characterized by asymmetry. Banks and major corporations are flush with capital — large businesses are recording record profits — but job growth is tepid, unemployment remains high and small businesses are struggling.

At first glance, the combination of record corporate profits alongside anemic job growth seems contrary, but the two are directly connected. The primary reason corporate profits are at record highs is that large companies learned to be lean and highly productive during the worst years of the recession. The profits generated through a reduced but more productive headcount has induced many large companies to continue this lean approach even as we emerge from recession. The result: record profits despite weak revenue growth, which leads to a lack of hiring.

The job growth problem is even more nuanced than that. It turns out that the hiring we are seeing is at the extreme ends of the spectrum. To ensure strong profits, corporations are cutting out the middle layers of management — the middle-class. In their place, they are hiring at the very low end and promoting at the high end. Senior management compensation is up nearly 25% this year ($9M for the average S&P 500 CEO), to levels higher than in pre-recession days, according to executive compensation research firm Equilar.

On the other side, we have job growth coming in at the bottom of the pyramid, mostly minimum wage and temporary positions. Take last month's job creation, for example. Out of the 260,000 jobs created in April, a whopping 60,000 jobs came from one company: McDonald's. There is nothing wrong with flipping burgers for a living, but it will not pull us out of a recession.

Meanwhile, middle-class jobs are declining at an alarming rate. Middle income jobs have been falling rapidly for some time and now represent well less than half of all jobs in the US. New numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that these middle income jobs have been replaced by low-income jobs. This has left 17 million college-educated Americans with jobs well below their educational levels. If the middle-class are filling the jobs available for the less educated, then the poorest Americans will largely be left jobless. The question we need to start asking is not "how do we add jobs to the economy?"; rather, it is "how do we create middle-class jobs to rebuild our economy?"

Without middle-class jobs, our society will enter into a "Stagnant Age" of two classes: rich and poor. And with two-thirds of our GDP coming from consumer spending — and most of that coming from the middle-class — we will be left with a shrinking economy.

Path Hires Another Engineer From Facebook -- Ops Guy Matthew Welty

Matthew Welty

Path, the mobile social networking startup, has hired another employee away from Facebook: Operations manager Matthew Welty, who had joined Facebook about 4 years ago, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Path founder/CEO Dave Morin was an early and influential Facebook employee, so it makes sense that he'd hire away a few former coworkers.

(Most recently, Path hired another Facebook engineer, Nathan Folkman, but he wasn't there when Morin worked there.)

Here's how Welty describes his work at Facebook on LinkedIn: "I worked in a range of hands-on technical and people management roles, from starting Facebook's original 24x7x365 Site Reliability team, to conceiving and managing the Application Operations group, and finally architecting, implementing and supporting the technical infrastructure behind the new Facebook Messages."

With 2 Million Downloads Under Its Belt, Appsfire Raises $3.6 Million Series A

There are literally hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPad and Android apps to choose from, and yet finding good apps is far from easy. App discovery and recommendations is a fertile niche where a few startups are fighting for mindshare. After being downloaded more than 2 million times, app discovery startup Appsfire closed a $3.6 million series A, led by French VC firm IDinvest. (Appsfire is based in Paris and Tel Aviv, and was co-founded by Ouriel Ohayon, who used to be the editor of TechCrunch France). Appsfire crossed 1 million downloads in February, and then the 2-million mark in May. Ohayon says its various apps for the iPhone, Android, iPad, and kid's apps is generating 3 million leads to app developers each month. Appsfire lets you share your favorite apps with your friends via the web, your mobile device, or Facebook.

Editor's Letter: Living Your Values

Jane Berentson, editor of Inc.

How great leaders build great company cultures

I wouldn't last a day at TRX. Hell, I wouldn't make it past the orientation. When ex-Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick launched a business to sell exercise equipment and programs, he embedded his obsession with fitness deep in the culture. Employees aren't just encouraged to work out during the day; they're expected to. Staff members tread the hallways dressed in Lycra. When employees do sit, they sit on exercise balls. I'm not entirely comfortable with casters.

So TRX is not for me. But for the 132 toned or toning bodies employed there, TRX is, as one employee put it, "Perfect. Perfect." TRX is among the 2011 Top Small Company Workplaces selected by the not-for-profit organization Winning Workplaces and honored, as were last year's winners, in Inc. To read these companies' applications—chockablock with bountiful benefits, ample vacation, flexible hours, and tuition reimbursement—is to appreciate how generous, and often ingenious, caring leaders can be.

As editor-at-large Leigh Buchanan points out in her story about the Top Small Company Workplaces ("Core Values"), entrepreneurs enjoy a remarkable opportunity: to build from scratch cultures that reflect their beliefs about what is important, fair, and fun. They tailor practices and policies to the kinds of people that will help their businesses thrive while fulfilling their personal need to invent something. Employees know what their employers value, because the entire company lives those values every day. Decisions become easier when anyone in a company can ask, In this kind of situation, what do people like us do?

Thinking about these companies inspired me to ask Inc.'s editorial staff members how they see the magazine's culture. To assure anonymity, I used that great—and free—software tool Survey Monkey (which brings me to another helpful story in this issue: "Best Business Bargains"). I received some insightful responses and was gratified to see we're on the right track. And the exercise reminded me of another truth about cultures: They are an ongoing collaboration between leaders and the people they serve.

New Couple Alert: Hayden Panettiere and Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez has guided the New York Jets to back-to-back AFC Conference Championship Games. But questions remain about the quarterback's decision-making.

Both on and off the field, apparently.

Cameras captured Sanchez with Hayden Panettiere last week, as Rumor Fix reports they entered a hamburger restaurant together and left smiling.

Mark Sanchez PicHayden Panettiere, Short Hair

"They seemed very close and very happy," a witness says, although someone close to Panettiere claims the two are, you guessed it, "just friends."

Hayden Panettiere split with boxer Wladimir Klitschko earlier this month, while Sanchez has enjoyed his run as a bachelor in NYC. He's been linked with Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Lindsay McCormick, among others.
